Dating Conventions

In the setting, dates are written in terms of Cycles, 14400 - year cycles that are easily read in the stars of each Catalyzed world. Although other dating conventions have been occasionally used (3rd year of King Thirmin's reign), these have never been popular with historians compared to the universality of the Cycle. The campaign begins in year 14381 of the Cycle; human records do not reach before this cycle, although some scholars of ancient civilizations believe there may have been as many as two prior cycles. Since this knowledge is the domain of the learned, by and large people believe the world was created in year 1.

The year is divided into 360 days, 12 months of 30 days each.

Dates are written in this format: YYYYY.MM.DD

Why are we talking about this?

Reasonably universal dating conventions are handy for producing puzzles that the players can encounter, but just as importantly they help us organize our notes and thoughts on the setting. The setting is deliberately designed in the years coming up to a major astrological landmark, which supports the machinations of the various doomsday cults. The hysteria surrounding the cosmological convergence in 14400 plays to these cults.
